We have rules, and they're non-negotiable. GreySteel is really just a small, highly specialized black iron gym, full of heavy objects to drop, platforms to trip over, and hard surfaces to bump into. These environmental factors are unavoidable, but injuries and accidents are not.

Our rules are strict and strictly enforced for your safety.

Obey them, and nobody gets hurt.

  • Clients must follow the Coach’s directions at all times. If you are unwilling to follow directions or to be taught, you should not train here.

  • We do BARBELL training here. Clients must understand that GreySteel training is focused exclusively on barbell exercises and related assistance and conditioning exercises, as described in Starting Strength and other publications. Clients are not trained, and will not train, in other fitness or exercise models at GreySteel.

  • Clients will not perform the exercises in the Coach’s absence, unless given express permission to do so. Which they won't get.

  • Clients must not leave the training area without informing the Coach. The entry, foyer restrooms and training facilities are the only areas permitted to clients during training hours. Liability, safety and security concerns mandate that clients will not wander off to other areas of the property.

  • Clients are responsible for bringing their own non-alcoholic fluid replacements (beverages) and energy snacks, and are encouraged to do so. Drinkables and munchies are not provided by Greysteel.

  • Members must procure acceptable shoes and gym wear within 30 days, subject to termination of their membership at the discretion of Greysteel.

  • Clients must appear for class on time.  Late arrivals cause severe disruption in the flow of training and inconveniences other clients. Missed classes are governed strictly by the terms of the contract.

  • Clients must attend to personal hygiene. Nails will be clipped short. Unmentionable body parts will be concealed in accordance with common decency. Shirts will be worn at all times. (Pants, too.) Clients will appear in clean, freshly-laundered gym wear. Clients may understandably GET smelly, but those who SHOW UP smelly may be sent home at the Coach’s discretion, without refund.

  • Clients must watch their step. The gym inevitably becomes a bit cluttered at times, despite our efforts. Tripping over the platform or a bar or plate can result in injury. Be alert. While you’re being alert, pick something up and put it away.

  • Clients have responsibility for double-checking their bar loading, bench position, platform clearance, and hook and pin placement.

  • Clients will not attempt exercises they have not been trained to perform.

  • Gloves are not worn for the barbell lifts. Period. Chalk is provided by Greysteel.

  • Dropped bars will be tended. If you don’t know what this means, you shouldn’t drop the bar. Bars loaded with five or ten pound plates will not be dropped under any circumstances.

  • Clients may certainly express a preference for music. It may or may not have an impact on what actually gets played.

  • Clients must IMMEDIATELY inform Greysteel staff of ANY physical symptoms or discomfort whatsoever. If the Coach is concerned about your condition, regardless of any complaints you may or may not express, he may discontinue your session at any time and direct you to rest or seek care. You will comply.

  • Street shoes are not worn on the platforms.

  • Clients are responsible for their own property and possessions. GreySteel cannot be responsible for lost property.

  • The use of chalk is encouraged. Apply chalk OVER THE CHALK BUCKET, to minimize the dissipation of this pernicous powder all over the gym.

  • This is not a spa; it is a black iron (or, rather, “grey steel”) gym. We are not personal trainers. We don’t wear khakis, we don’t get you a lemonade between sets, we don’t wipe your brow. We don’t pamper. We train. Here, you get to participate in loading the bar for yourself and your training partners, and you may be asked to help put away plates and such during and after your session.

  • Clean up after yourself. Food and drink may be taken in the area in front of the platform (“the benches”). No food or drink may be brought forward of this area to the platform or the racks.

  • Members be expected to read Starting Strength and Practical Programming during their first six months of training. You may be subjected to grilling on the subject matter at any time.

  • Get a decent training log, and keep it up to date. The Coach will want to see it. Don’t embarrass yourself by not having a current log ready when he asks.

  • We yell at people here. Everyone gets yelled at sooner or later, even the Coach. (Yes. Really.) It’s not personal, it's not abusive, and it's not vicious. We do it because it is often a very effective coaching technique. Many form errors arise from a lack of adequate yelling. It is also an excellent treatment for thin skin.

  • If you have  ANY questions or requests, just ask. Write questions in your log for next time. Send Sully an email. Ask questions on the platform. Heinlein once said, "When one teaches, two learn." We learn from each other. We want you to get stronger, and if you're confused or concerned about something, we want to address it. But we’re not mind readers.

  • Enjoy Yourself! Every time you set foot on the platform and get on the bar, you are engaged in a courageous affirmation of life and vitality, taking another step on the road less traveled, and making an investment in yourself. You're alive! You're getting stronger, healthier, better. You are my inspiration. Live each moment, and take pride and joy in your own courage and accomplishment.
